About Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre and the GEO Group Australia

The GEO Group Australia is the country's leading provider of outsourced correctional services, operating in NSW, QLD and VIC. Our goal is to deliver better corrections, and in doing so, create safer communities.

The Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre has been continually managed by GEO on behalf of Queensland Corrective Services since its opening in 1992. Located in Wacol, just 20 kilometres south-west of Brisbane, Arthur Gorrie is Queensland's largest correctional centre, safely and securely housing over 1,000 adult male remand prisoners for the period leading up to, and during, their trial.

We measure our success in delivering ‘safer communities’ through our ability to successfully reintegrate the prisoners we release, with corresponding reductions in their rate of re-offending.

An exciting new career awaits

We are now seeking applications for our next intake of Correctional Officers at the Arthur Gorrie Correctional Centre based at Wacol. All roles will initially be offered on a casual basis, however once all training and certification is obtained, there are opportunities to quickly move into full-time employment.

Correctional Officers perform the important role of managing and supervising offenders, ensuring the safety and security of the Correctional Centre and assisting key stakeholders to reduce recidivism through specially designed programs and services delivered to offenders.

A day in the life of a Correctional Officer at Arthur Gorrie will include (but not be limited to) the following:

  • Overseeing prisoners at the unit blocks where they are housed including doing daily head counts and room searches;
  • Escorting prisoners to various appointments including hospital visits and court appearances;
  • Conducting perimeter searches of the prison and controlling access of people in and out of the facility;
  • Managing the visitors area of the prison and overseeing prisoner visitation sessions; and
  • Managing behaviours of prisoners, answering any reasonable requests and dealing with rule breaches appropriately.

Most shifts worked by Correctional Officers are 10.5 - 11 hours. Arthur Gorrie is a 24/7 operation so you will be required to work across a mix of day, night and weekend shifts once your training is completed.

What skills & experience do you need?

No previous experience in a similar role, or any particular qualifications are required to be successful in this position. We know that good Correctional Officers come from a variety of backgrounds and as such, we encourage people from all different races, genders and cultural backgrounds to apply.

Instead, what we value is life experience, resilience and maturity. Whilst we will provide extensive training and support, this role isn't for everyone and as such we look for people who can show the following attributes:

  • Self-confidence and calm under pressure;
  • Conflict management and problem-solving skills;
  • Initiative and the ability to think on your feet;
  • The ability and willingness to follow rules, policies and procedures;
  • Professionalism and integrity;
  • A good level of physical fitness (especially muscular-skeletal); and
  • Empathy, emotional intelligence and cultural awareness.

More importantly, you will believe in our goal that delivering better corrections will create safer communities and you will trust in the legal process, treating prisoners with respect at all times.

Please note: Only permanent Australian residents or Australian citizens are eligible to apply for these positions. Persons who engage in excessive alcohol consumption and/or use illegal drugs are not suited to this work environment.

Prior to commencement you must obtain the following:

  • Current First Aid and CPR certification;
  • Current, unrestricted manual Driver's Licence;
  • A satisfactory security clearance conducted by GEO Group. Such clearance is unlikely to be granted if you have been convicted of a criminal offence even as a juvenile.

Training, salary and benefits

GEO Group places an incredibly high importance on the training and development of all staff. A highly attractive hourly rate is also on offer made up of the following:
